Private US Foundations: What They've Done For Ukraine

Private foundations in the US have handed over $12.3 million to help Ukraine relief efforts over the past 12 months, with contributions being particularly strong in April and May 2022, industry figures show.

On the somber anniversary of Russia’s invasion of its neighbor on Feb 24, 2022, Foundation Source provided data on the extent of philanthropic contributions from its sector. It tracked 527 grants.

Donations peaked at the 90-day mark after the conflict began, but donors continued to give over the entire 12-month period. UNICEF USA, a non-profit specifically focused on helping children, received the most donation dollars in the past year from private foundations, Foundation Source said in an update. Other prominent non-profits in giving included World Central Kitchen; International Rescue Committee; American National Red Cross; Cityserve International; Globalgiving Foundation; Save The Children Federation; International Committee of the Red Cross; Medecins sans Frontieres USA; and Samaritans Purse.

The average size of grants stood at $23,254; the largest grant in the past 12 months was for £2 million.

To put the data in context, Foundation Source supports more than 2,000 foundations that collectively represent more than $22 billion in charitable assets.
